Student Survival Apps

Student Survival Apps

Welcome to Gloucestershire College!

The Student Innovators have begun looking at apps for this academic year. They have created a collection of essential apps to help you at college. Take a look below at our Student Survival Apps collection, all the apps are compatible with Apple and Android.

UNiDAYS

A student discount app, all you need to do is enter your student e-mail address to create a profile. You can then receive discounts in certain shops and websites e.g. New Look and MyProtein. For online discounts you just click the link or copy and paste the code; for in store you simply show your profile as proof of being a student. I would recommend this app to all Gloscol students because who doesn’t love saving money!

Quizlet
An app to create and store flashcards. You can create a set of flashcards or even use some pre-existing ones that other users have made. This app is so useful as it is pretty much guaranteed that over the course of the year you will lose or forget some of your flashcards which you spent ages making. The app works without internet so is especially useful for last minute revision on the bus to college.

Focus Now
A time management app. It is psychologically proven that revision is most effective in short 20 minute increments as opposed to all-nighters. This app allows you to set a timer for your chosen time and it restarts if you try to open another app on your phone i.e. you got distracted. I find it useful to set myself a target of say 3-5 timers a day to get revision and homework done instead of just planning to revise all day.

My Study Life
This is essentially the same as carrying around a notebook planner but on your phone. You can input your timetable, deadlines, homework, exams and holidays to keep yourself on track during the school year. For those just starting out at college you will soon learn that time management is vital because it is down to you to keep yourself on track as it is no longer your tutors’ jobs to remind you constantly like you may have had at secondary school.

This app has been reviewed and recommend by two other Innovators! Read their reviews here:

Magoosh
This is an app designed to improve your vocabulary. For anyone who is taking an essay subject, such as history, psychology etc., using more sophisticated vocabulary can help to improve the quality of your essays. This app gives you the option to choose your level of difficulty and tests whether you’ve learnt the words and their definition before you can move on. There is a limited variety of words and they are all random so for subject specific vocabulary you should make your own revision (possibly using Quizlet).
